We all know about the ongoing pandemic and its seriousness, the situation doesn’t seem controlled at all the corona positive cases are increasing around the world at a very rapid pace, researchers are working day and night trying to discover a vaccine, all the scientists and researchers are continuously conducting various experiments on various animals and humans as well but till now the whole world is still standing empty-handed. As on the official terms, there is still no vaccine or medicine that can work as a cure for this virus.
So, the only way to fight against this pandemic is through a strong immunity system of every individual. Until now the only reason to worry was the increasing cases of Corona Virus, till now it was only said for the senior citizens and the children to stay inside their homes for avoiding contact with the virus, this was said keeping in mind the weak immunity levels of them. It was very easy to understand that they were more prone to the risk of getting this virus into their bodies.
But now, here is new research that has come to light according to this, the people who are suffering from the life-threatening disease of cancer for more than 2 years are also very much at risk of falling prey to Coronavirus that too at severe levels.
The findings of the research are published in the journal Frontiers in Oncology, around 150 + cancer patients were taken into observation and all of them were found COVID– 19 positive in London.
The researcher named Mieke Van Hemelrijck from the king’s college London, the UK was quoted saying “Our findings provide the first insight into the possible effects of cancer and its treatments on Covid-19 outcomes”
The researchers used the latest processes to identify the demographic and clinical characteristics that were in association with death due to COVID 19 or with its severity levels.
A follow up was taken after 37 days and an observation was made that around 22 percent of the patients died because of the COVID 19 infection. The patients who were diagnosed and were undergoing treatment for the same since last more than 2 years that is before the discovery of COVID 19 symptoms were at a much higher risk.
Other than the cancer patients those patients who face breathing issues or those who have higher CRP levels were also found very much prone to Coronavirus infection. The infection of COVID 19 is more associated with fever, breathlessness, and also with the symptoms of gastrointestinal issues, and such symptoms were more found in the patients of cancer.
Other than the symptoms given above there were some more that were found in the patients battling cancer hypertension was the most common out of all though they also carried symptoms of diabetes, renal impairment, and the symptoms of cardiovascular disease. If we get into the tumors that were found most common then we can say that those were urological, gynecological, and hematological and also breast.
Further when those cancer patients were put to classification in accordance with the severity of COVID 19 the biggest of the proportions were found of hematological that was around 36 % whereas around 40 % were battling with stage IV cancer. The other 46 % of patients had cancerous cells that were growing inside their bodies abnormally and were thus spreading in the whole of the body for one year.
Hemelrijick was also quoted saying “Large studies with detailed information on Covid-19 safety measures and oncological care are warranted to explore the intersection of Covid-19 and cancer in terms of clinical outcomes.”
As we move towards the conclusion we can say that cancer patients being more prone to the infection of coronavirus is more likely to be because the immunity system of the patients gets weaker because of all the destruction that is done by the cancerous cells in their bodies, and thus it becomes all the more easier for the virus to get an entry in the bodies of such patients also if we look at a normal coronavirus patient then we see that because of the strong immunity system it becomes easy for them to fight against the virus whereas if a cancer patient gets the infection of COVID 19 then for such a person it becomes difficult to fight against it because of the weak immunity system.
Therefore we can say that prevention is the only cure available against this virus, and for that prevention, it is very essential for the people to keep working on the health of their immunity systems, also it is advised that the people only leave their houses when it is really very much needed otherwise it is best as per the present situation to remain more inside the houses. Other than that those who need to out for some urgency should also be careful and should keep a note of all the precautionary measures that are to be taken for avoiding the spread of Coronavirus. It is the time for the whole world to come together as only then it would be possible to deal with this incurable disease that is mercilessly taking away lives every day, every minute and every second and thus taking the world on the path of severe destruction.
