There is an announcement for upcoming municipal polls in Delhi. The election commission of state on Tuesday released the wards which would be reserved for the women candidates and Scheduled Caste in south, north, and east municipal corporations. Let’s move ahead with the Delhi MCD Election Polls announcement of reserved seats.

According to official announcements, 11 of the 64 municipal wards are reserved for Schedule Caste candidates in the east corporation. In the south and north corporations, 20 and 15 seats are reserved for SC Candidates that have 104 municipal wards each. If the candidate is an SC woman then, the number of reserved seats in the north, south, East corporations is 10, 8, and 6 respectively. The generally reserved seat number for women in south is 45, east 27, and north 42. It is not less than 50% of seats that are reserved for women candidates in the civic polls. SC candidates reserved seats are as per their population percentage.

A detailed overview of reserved seats

Well, this is confirmed that the State Election Commission on Tuesday announced the reserved seat lists for the election to 272 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The MCD elections are scheduled in April and as per the order, the reserved Scheduled Castes seats are based on the 2011 Census. They are like-

  • 15 or 104 wards in the South Corporation
  • 20 of 104 in the North and,
  • 11 of 64 wards in the East

Now the rest 50% of seats have been reserved for women. Although the number of reserved seat number hasn’t increased. The move is likely to throw the challenges up to sit councilors, whose seats might fall in the category of SC or women reserved list. It also includes the three sitting mayors.

BJP Senior Leaders state unit said that the modification of most wards reservation status would help the party who deny tickets to the candidates without being unhappy about it. A total of 270 seats were up for grabs and it had been reported that the nominated female candidates’ numbers are from the four major parties.

Now when the results are coming all the way, it has seen that 49 women are there from North Delhi, 27 are from East, and 42 are from South Delhi have won the MCD seats. And this calculation is out of 270 seats and 124 have been secured by the women candidates. It is still a low figure and everyone would love to consider this a massive victory for the female lead.

Just after changes in the reservation status of wards, some of the councilors were seen promoting their wives on the social media platform. An AAP Councilor has said in a statement, “If I have worked hard in the past five years and still working and earned the trust of people then, why can’t get a ticket for my wide?”

The Women Reservation Bill Alliance has been reaching to different citizens sections in an attempt to get support for their campaign to request the Indian Government to pass this essential bill at the very earliest.

The move will also affect the opposition and Leaders of Opposition seats in the North Corporation AAP’s Vikas Goel, East Corporation Leader of Opposition Manoj Tyagi, and South Corporation opposition Leader Prem Chauhan have also been reserved.

Conclusion

In our perception, women are reaching on powerful position and are blocked by the old conservative mindset and double standards. Women should unite to demand action on the WRB that has made the history of being the longest pending bill of Independent India for the last 21 years. The average globally of women in Parliament is 22.40% and India has ranked 103rd place in 140 countries with a 12% representation of women in Parliament. The State Assemblies figure is even lower with the 9% of female representation.

We really wish this victory as with this, the face of Delhi Municipality changes, and the female leadership will escort in the benefits for women in Delhi.
